“Mom reported she never wished to divorce him bc she assumed folks would believe poorly of her if her children did not have a father,” Otis wrote. “She assumed we ‘deserved’ to have a father in our life. So she took the beatings to avoid the stigma that’s connected with divorce ??‍♀️.”

The New York native, even so, believes “there shouldn’t be a stigma” about leaving a partnership that’s heading downhill. “Divorce is not failure (even if it takes place without having abuse, obviously),” she added.
